Alongside the loudest console debut in early June, gaming classics also want to ride the hype wave. And I love it because there are truly iconic games in the mix. I'm talking about Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut. This isn’t just a port of the 2015 classic; it’s an enriched experience packed with new features and surprises. This definitive edition of this iconic prequel will launch on June 5, 2025, exclusively on Nintendo Switch™ 2.

About Yakuza 0

Set in the vibrant and chaotic world of 1988 Japan, Yakuza 0 takes players on a gripping, high-stakes tour through Tokyo’s Kamurocho and Osaka’s Sotenbori. These two fictional entertainment districts are packed with neon lights, seedy back alleys, and more than a few people looking to make or break your day.

This action-packed role-playing game puts you in the shoes of two unforgettable protagonists. First, there’s Kazuma Kiryu, a fledgling yakuza trying to clear his name after being framed for murder. Then, you have Goro Majima, the charismatic cabaret club manager with a dark past and a dangerous mission. Together, their intertwined stories create a masterpiece of crime drama, betrayal, and unexpected humor.

The Director’s Cut takes the original game to another level. For the first time, the critically acclaimed story includes an English voice cast, with stars like Yong Yea as Kazuma Kiryu and Matt Mercer as Goro Majima. The update also adds more than 20 minutes of brand-new cutscenes that give extra depth to the plot and characters, along with the all-new Red Light Raid mode, a multiplayer feature where players team up to tackle waves of enemies.

Exploring the World

The game’s locations, Tokyo and Osaka, are designed to feel vibrant and interactive. You’ll find busy streets, engaging side quests ranging from serious to humorous, and activities like karaoke, pool, and arcade games. These features enhance immersion, making the world feel alive.

The Red Light Raid mode allows up to four players to team up and battle waves of enemies. With over 60 playable characters to choose from, this mode provides a fast-paced, cooperative experience ideal for fans of teamwork and action.

1980s Japan Setting

Set in 1988, the game captures the essence of late-’80s Japan. The neon-lit streets, period-accurate fashion, and nightclub music bring the era to life, creating an atmosphere filled with nostalgia and cultural detail.

What to Expect and Where to Shop

It’s commendable that SEGA decided to dub the franchise in English. This could make the story even more accessible to newcomers. Hopefully, the English dubbing will preserve the tone of the original. And one thing is certain: the Director’s Cut of Yakuza 0 will be released on June 5, 2025, for the Nintendo Switch™ 2 and is available for pre-order.
