Probably by the end of October, we will hear from Apple the details about new devices featuring the M4 processor and updated ports, specifically:
- 14-inch MacBook Pro M4;
- MacBook Pro M4 Pro and MacBook Pro M4 Max in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes;
- iMac M4;
- Mac mini M4 and Mac mini M4 Pro;
- Magic Mouse USB-C, Magic Trackpad USB-C, and Magic Keyboard USB-C.
Mark Gurman reported on his Twitter that media and creatives are being invited to various meetings on 10/30, but he believes it will be an online event. Reflecting on last year's Scary Fest in October, the manufacturer still hasn't managed to announce the updated Mac lines and their peripherals this year, and it makes sense to present them that day.
About the Mac mini M4, it will feature an updated design resembling a small Apple TV box.
In light of this news, details about a future of mixed reality headsets from the Cupertino team have emerged. Apple has significantly reduced production of its Vision Pro mixed reality headset since summer and might stop producing the current version by year-end. This suggests sufficient stock to meet near-term demand. Apple aims to develop a cheaper model, expected by the end of 2025, with a halt on creating a high-end second-generation version for at least a year.
The first version saw low demand due to its $3,500 price and limited apps. According to The Information, suppliers have made enough components for 500,000 to 600,000 headsets (we previously wrote that 500,000 devices were expected to be sold in 2024), but production was paused in May due to weak forecasts. Luxshare, handling assembly, might reduce output further in November. Apple sold about 370,000 units this year, with a forecast of 50,000 more by year-end, compared to Meta's 9 million Quest sales. Despite stopping next-gen development, Apple may release minor updates, using existing components. CEO Tim Cook noted Vision Pro is not a mass-market product due to its high price but mentioned early adopters are interested.
