Where To Buy |
When searching for a gaming laptop in online stores, you often have to use additional filters besides just the words "gaming laptop" to find it faster. With the Gigabyte G6X (2024) model, you may overlook it because its category (for example, on Amazon) is a traditional or basic laptop. This secret may be intentional, aiming to keep it under wraps from more discerning enthusiasts. But honestly, the official website lists it as a high-performance gaming AI laptop. The laptop has proven to be an interesting and well-balanced solution given its price.
Of course, the laptop does have some drawbacks. However, considering the price, it's hard to call them critical. The cooling system of the Gigabyte G6X (2024) runs loudly under maximum power, and some may find its color coverage to be lacking.
Design & Build Quality
We have already noted above that the Gigabyte G6X (2024) has a calm, understated design for a gaming laptop, lacking flashy lights or aggressive features. It features small stylized designs with the letter X on the working surface and lid. Most of the body is made of plastic, with a rough texture on the display frame and bottom, while the top case is smooth with a matte finish. The top cover is made of dark gray metal with a matte finish as well. Decorative elements include the Gigabyte logo on the right side of the lid and a design in the lower left corner. Ports and ventilation openings are located on three sides, which is typical for gaming laptops. The laptop's operation indicators are placed on the front edge. The screen bezels are not the thinnest but are standard for gaming models.
Four rubber feet on the corners of the bottom cover ensure a stable grip on surfaces. A significant portion of the bottom cover is dedicated to the cooling system vents, pulling in cold air from below and through the keyboard. Overall, the Gigabyte G6X 9KG (2024) is stylish and well-built, using thick plastic and metal that feels sturdy. Its dimensions are 14.21 x 10.2 x 1.13 inches, and it weighs 5.51 lbs. While it isn't the most compact laptop, that's expected for a gaming model, and it fits easily in a standard laptop compartment of a backpack.
Keyboard and Touchpad
The GIGABYTE G6X 9KG 2024 comes with a full-size island-style keyboard that includes a numeric keypad. The arrow keys are standard-sized and not separated from the other keys, making the right Shift key a bit shorter. The power button has been relocated to the upper right corner to prevent accidental presses. There's a new dedicated key for launching the AI assistant Copilot, which Microsoft reps discussed frequently. It's located between the right Ctrl and Alt keys.
The keys are medium-sized and feature single-zone backlighting with four brightness levels and 15 color options. Overall, the keyboard is comfortable to use, providing a responsive keystroke and a nearly standard layout that minimizes the adjustment period.
The touchpad measures 4.76 x 3.29 inches. It's made of plastic but offers a smooth surface for easy finger movement. Sensitivity and accuracy are good, so for most tasks, you won't need a mouse, except for gaming.
Display & Camera
The Gigabyte G6X 9KG 2024 comes with a 16-inch IPS display that has a resolution of 1920 x 1200 and a 16:10 aspect ratio, which is popular in both business and gaming laptops. It features 45% NTSC color coverage and a refresh rate of 165 Hz, plus an effective anti-glare coating. The slim bezels on all four sides provide an impressive screen-to-body ratio of up to 90%, ensuring an expansive viewing experience for gamers. The display offers great viewing angles, contrast, and brightness, making it suitable for bright office environments. However, the colors may appear less vibrant due to the limited color coverage. Above the display, there's a 720p webcam, an operation indicator, and two microphones, resulting in a fairly standard setup.
Connectivity
On the left side, you'll find a full-size USB Type-A 3.2 Gen1, a combined 3.5mm audio jack for headphones or headsets, and a slot for a Kensington Lock. On the right, there's a full-size USB Type-A 3.2 Gen2 and a USB Type-C 3.2 Gen2 that supports Power Delivery 3.0, allowing you to charge the laptop with a compatible adapter. It can handle up to 100W, which is enough for most work tasks, though it may not support maximum gaming performance. You can keep a Type-C power adapter with Power Delivery at the office, so you don't have to carry the bulky original charger.
At the back, there are two hot air exhaust zones and additional ports: RJ-45, HDMI 2.1, USB Type-C 3.2 Gen2 with Display Port 1.4 support, as well as a port for the included power adapter. The port selection is solid and covers all your needs.
For wireless connectivity, it features Bluetooth 5.2 and fast Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax) 2x2, along with a gigabit Ethernet port.
Processor and Hardware
The Gigabyte G6X (2024) is powered by a robust 13th-generation Intel Raptor Lake processor, specifically the Intel Core i7-13650HX. It has 14 cores in total, including 6 performance cores that clock between 2.6 and 4.9 GHz and 8 efficiency cores ranging from 1.9 to 3.6 GHz, supporting up to 20 threads and featuring a 24 MB cache. This processor is built on the Intel 7 (10 nm) process, with a standard TDP of 55W and a maximum short-term power of up to 157W. For lighter tasks, it includes an integrated graphics accelerator, the Intel UHD Graphics, which has 16 execution units and can run at up to 1550 MHz. The laptop also comes with 16 GB DDR5-4800 MHz of RAM using two 8 GB sticks, and both SO-DIMM slots support up to 64 GB. For anyone who wants to criticize us for including 16 GB of RAM in gaming laptops, remember that you can upgrade it to a total of 64 GB across two slots.
For discrete graphics, the laptop features the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop. While it may not be the most powerful mobile graphics option, its TGP is 105W, which is impressive compared to gaming models with the 4070 at a TGP of 70W. This graphics chip is built on the 5 nm NVIDIA AD107 architecture and includes 3072 CUDA cores, 96 texture units, 24 RT cores, and 96 tensor cores. The base frequency is 1710 MHz, with a maximum boost frequency of 2100 MHz and 8 GB GDDR6 of video memory. The laptop also features a MUX Switch, allowing the discrete graphics card to connect directly to the display, which can enhance graphic performance and reduce output latency.
AI Features
Gigabyte highlights the importance of AI in its laptop promotions, stating that the fourth-generation tensor cores in the GeForce RTX 4060 make the laptop 20 times faster at generative AI tasks compared to laptops without discrete graphics.
Cooling
The GIGABYTE G6X (2024) laptop features a WINDFORCE cooling system that consists of 2 fans with 67 blades, 5 copper heat pipes, and a radiator with 219 fins that measure 0.15 mm thick.
Battery Life
The laptop comes with a 73 Wh battery and supports fast charging, reaching 50% in just 30 minutes with the included power adapter. It can also be charged using Type-C blocks that support Power Delivery 3.0. A full charge takes just under 2 hours. However, using it for gaming on the battery isn’t ideal, as the Gigabyte G6X 9KG (2024) lasts less than 2 hours in that scenario. On the other hand, with minimal use, like working on documents at low brightness, the laptop can last about 6.5 hours, which is a good benchmark for a gaming model.
