Honestly, we were just considering creating video reviews of devices that appear on our website, and the question of equipment for this was still open for the editorial team. And this winter holidays, the company Fifine offered TheGeekyThings to review their wireless lavalier microphone M9 and provided it to us for testing.

Let me start by saying that I had the freedom to form my own opinions about the Fifine M9—good or bad—so I can share all my honest thoughts on this lav mic below.

Fifine's Reputation

Fifine, founded in 2009, has earned a solid reputation over the years for offering high-quality audio equipment at an affordable price. Their devices are quite reliable, particularly their standout streaming microphones, USB podcasting systems, and gaming headsets. Microphones for clothes are nothing new for the company, so the Fifine M9 is not a newcomer but rather an anticipated evolution for the manufacturer. We’ve been impressed by their excellence, especially with the Fifine streaming microphone, which has been flawless for my daily work calls. I’ve already mentioned how it surprised my colleagues with its sound quality.Let’s find out if Fifine can keep up their great reputation. Here’s everything you need to know about the Fifine M9 lavalier mic!

Kit, Design & Build Quality

This wireless microphone is packaged in a sleek black-red box, which contains a durable protective fabric case. Based on its rigidity, it likely has a plastic structure beneath the fabric in my thoughts.

In-the-box

Inside the box, you'll find a charging case with two wireless lavalier microphones and a receiver inside. Also includes a set of spring cables designed for various devices. The cables are near about 2 feet (more than half a meter) in length when stretched. You have 3 types: a Type-C to 3.5mm cable, a TRS (Tip, Ring, Sleeve) 3.5mm to TRRS (Tip, Ring, Ring, Sleeve) 3.5mm cable for phones, and a TRS 3.5mm to TRS 3.5mm cable for cameras. For added convenience, each cable is labeled to prevent mistakes while connecting.

Should be noted that the Fifine M9 is compatible out of the box with iPhones from the 15 series and Type-C devices. However, to connect it to older iPhone models, but an additional 3.5mm-lightning adapter will need to be purchased separately. I'll return to the one I purchased.

Charging Case

The black case with a ribbed or linear side, name whatever you want, is likely to help prevent scratches. Made from durable plastic, it has a charge indicator that is quite informative, with a scale from 25 to 100 percent (4 LEDs). The case functions as a power bank for microphones and a receiver. When you place the neck microphones in the case, the strong magnet secures them, and they start charging instantly.

Mics

The Fifine M9 are wireless condenser microphones of a compact size, equipped with a clip-on mount and two indicators—one of which lights up blue when the pair of microphones is connected. In my opinion, they could use a magnetic mount to make it easier to attach them to clothing, as the clip-on mount can be somewhat limiting, for example, on clothing with a high collar. But, as they say, that's a matter of personal preference. It's worth mentioning that these small clip mics are comfortable to hold during interviews, thanks to their perfect hand size. Each mic can be fitted with a furry windscreen for outdoor use.

On the side panel, there are two buttons: pairing and the button for turning noise cancellation on/off (testing on the video). And, of course, the microphone on top. It’s also made of black plastic with a ribbed design similar to the case. I’m not sure how scratch-resistant the body will be, but it looks high-quality.

Receiver

And the radio receiver, which also has its place in the case for charging. It features additional indicators for the sensitivity level of each neck microphone. On the sides there are buttons: on one side—two cyclic buttons for adjusting the sensitivity of microphones and a power button (or a mute button with a short press for the active loop mics). On the other side, there are two more buttons: one to reconnect and another to switch between mono and stereo modes - M/S. This side also has a 3.5mm jack for connecting to your device. At the bottom, there are magnetic connectors for charging in the case, along with a Type-C port for charging as well

It would also be nice if it showed the battery level for each microphone, but we must keep the device's price in mind, as additional features come at a cost.

Simple and Easy Out Of The Box

The setup is incredibly simple: true plug-and-play. The microphones are ready to use right out of the box—just take them out of the case, and they’ll automatically connect to the receiver. Blue indicators on the microphones confirm that everything is working. All that’s left is to connect the receiver to your device. Choose the mode (mono or stereo) and adjust the microphone volume. If needed, attach the windscreen. You can enable the noise reduction function directly on the microphones.

Video: Unboxing and Sound Testing

The omnidirectional polar pattern and wide frequency range of the microphone allow it to capture clean, balanced sound even in challenging conditions. So, let’s talk about the clarity and quality of recording in different conditions, as well as how the microphone handles background noise and surrounding sounds. We tested it with our team in a fairly noisy “office” because, during the holidays, our friends visit us every day, and it feels like an endless process. But in the lapel microphone test video, there were no background voices or unnecessary sounds at all—the sound clarity was impressive.

I also checked how the microphone works through walls, and the difference in sound quality was either minimal or non-existent, even in the next room. So, barriers at short distances aren’t a problem for it. However, going outdoors was a bit too much. The direct signal was obstructed by a wall and an entry door—an imitation of barriers—and the signal started to drop, which immediately affected the sound quality.

I didn’t include a comparison with a standard phone microphone because it’s easy to find smartphone microphone tests for any model. Plus, you already know how your phone’s mic sounds. TheGeekyThings team conducted a test on an iPhone 14 Pro Max, and you can hear the results in the Fifine M9 unboxing video (start from 3:16). As you can see, indoors, noise protection isn’t needed at all—it just adds a chamber-like sound. The same with the wind screen in the room, despite the noise, it is not necessary. But outdoors, even with mid level noises, these are absolutely essential.

Compatibility & Devices

The Fifine M9 wireless microphone is compatible with Android smartphones, iPhones, tablets, laptops, and other popular recording devices. And as I said above, our team is only considering the possibility of video recordings. Therefore, we don’t have professional recording equipment, except our phones (and a monopod). Oh, and for 2025, that’s plenty to kick off a video blog!

Now, about the devices that took part in the testing. We tried it on the iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 16, and MacBook Pro. Let’s take a look at each device one by one.

  • iPhone 14 Pro Max - As noted in the description, the Fifine M9 microphone offers a connection option for Apple phones with a Type-C port (15 and 16 series). Alternatively, you can connect it via a 3.5mm jack using a lightning adapter. This required some time because no recommendations for connectors were provided. Honestly, I just grabbed the first one I found on Amazon. I chose this one because there are times when extra power for the phone is needed.

Connecting the Fifine lapel microphone to the iPhone went smoothly. That was my main concern since I had read reviews on different stores indicating that not everyone had a seamless experience.

  • iPhone 16 - Everything worked seamlessly here too. The Type-C cable simply plugs into your device, and that’s it. A pop-up appeared briefly (I didn’t manage to capture it), but it was connected as a USB headset. That is, when connected, you lose access to the phone speaker.

  • MacBook Pro - This was also straightforward. The Thunderbolt port accepted the Type-C connector and started working immediately. Right out of the box, you can start recording podcasts or, for example, stream your online course.

2 in 1 adapter for connecting mics to iPhones

We tested with a 2-in-1 adapter for the iPhone that combines a lightning charging port and a 3.5mm audio jack. It allows you to charge your device while listening to music or making voice calls. It’s compatible with the full range of Apple devices. But you can use any 3.5 lightning adapter you find and get the same result.

Battery & Runtime

The microphones hold a charge for up to 6 hours, thanks to their 150 mAh batteries. You can charge them directly via a Type-C cable, even without the case—though that's more of a last resort. The charging case has a 1200 mAh battery, so it lasts a long time. The receiver is also lightweight but works for a full 7 hours without needing a recharge. Honestly, I haven’t had to charge them yet after three days of sound testing. It was up to 1,5 hours each time. Sure, after “sound check,” I popped the mics back in the charging case. The Fifine claims up to 30 hours with the case—more than enough even for extended on-location interviews far from home.

Fifine M9 Loop Microphone: For Whom?

Who’s it for? This cordless system with 2 lavalier microphones can be useful for podcasters and TikTokers in many cases. For example, during on-the-go recordings, on a makeshift set, or for mobile outdoors shoots. It’s also a great choice for interviews, as you can attach a microphone to each participant, ensuring clear sound. Lavalier microphones work well for video podcasts too, especially when you want to minimize visible equipment that could distract viewers. They’re also handy for audio podcasters who value freedom of movement and want a hands-free experience. I’d also recommend it to students gathering opinions from classmates for projects or dissertations.

What about educators? The Fifine M9 lavalier microphone is definitely helpful for online lectures or hybrid classes, providing clear sound for remote students. If a teacher needs to move around or interact with students. Just don’t forget to test the device before using it, as hybrid lectures may require adjusting the microphone’s sensitivity. Overall, don’t limit your use of a Fifine M9 wireless microphone only to podcasts or vlogs.

Pros & Cons

  • Pros: The main highlight of the Fifine M9 is its affordability. For beginners or less demanding content creators, it’s a golden solution. Plus, it’s portable and comes with a great kit. The sound quality, as always with Fifine, is top-notch. This small lav mic delivers sound just as well as desktop or gaming microphones.

  • Cons: The main drawback I noticed is the lack of a magnet for attaching it to clothing. The clip does its job 100%, but it’s not as convenient to use, for example, with clothing that has a high collar. Another issue is that it can’t connect to older iPhones. That’s a bit disappointing, as many content creators still use them as cameras. However, honestly, it’s an easy problem to solve, and considering that this is one of the newest models of lavalier microphones, it’s simply keeping up with the times. In a couple of years, this definitely won’t be an issue anymore. And lastly - though we didn’t have to charge the microphones during testing, in my opinion, they lack battery status indicators.
