The game garnered favorable responses from both players and critics, despite having a few minor issues. This is demonstrated by its impressive peak online player count and positive Steam reviews.

Data from SteamDB reveals that Mortal Kombat 1 experienced a peak online player count of 38,000 players on PC only on its release day. Given the popularity of fighting games on consoles, it can be inferred that the peak online count on PlayStation and Xbox was no lower than that of the PC version.

On Steam, 73% of the reviews are positive, indicating that the majority of gamers enjoyed the experience. Players praised various aspects of the game, such as the narrative, combos, new Invasion mode, and the addition of intriguing characters. However, Mortal Kombat 1 did receive some criticism for its 30 fps during cutscenes and in its main menu, lackluster voice acting for certain characters, and the presence of bugs.

It is worth noting that prior to the official release, players from Russia and Belarus heavily criticized Mortal Kombat 1 on Metacritic due to the inability to play online. However, the game has since improved and now holds a score of 5.9 out of 10 from players and 86 from critics.
