We still have to wait for the warm days, but I’m already starting to prepare. After all, 2025 promises to be full of anniversaries that are very close to my heart. For example, this summer, we’ll be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the iconic Jaws.

Jaws’ Legacy in Cinema and Shark Myths

The movie Jaws, directed by Steven Spielberg in 1975, was a true breakthrough in cinema. The road to success wasn’t without its challenges—like the mechanical shark constantly breaking down due to the salty water. But this only helped the team focus on tension and the unseen threat. And let’s not forget John Williams’s genius score—agree, it kept viewers on edge right up to the finale. The story of a shark terrorizing a small resort town became a universal metaphor for the fear of the unknown. No wonder the film was a box office hit.

By the way, the shark in Jaws is the first villain who is a creature of nature—a real sea predator acting purely on survival instincts. Unlike most sci-fi villains, who are either fictional—like the aliens from Alien or Predator—or the result of technology gone wrong, like the Terminator, the shark’s motivation is simple, natural, and easy to understand.

Jaws was the first true "summer blockbuster," one that transformed the film industry. It introduced massive advertising campaigns and wide releases, which became the standard for major films. Plus, it left a huge cultural impact—from parodies and imitators to the fact that it inspired many to start talking about ecology. I’m about to the so-called "Jaws Effect," the false belief that sharks are malicious predators caused by the movie, which led to fear, mass shark hunting, and a decline in shark populations.
