It’s finally hitting consoles on February 6! This “save-them-all” platformer is packed with fast-paced action, awesome physics, and a retro vibe that really makes it stand out. Oh, and it’s all the work of solo developer and music producer Dr. Kucho, who spent eight years bringing this passion project to life. Fun fact: back in the day, his tracks had me dancing before I settled down. I used to split my time between clubbing and gaming, and now I’m amazed at how someone can be so skilled at both electronic music and game development.

Moons of Darsalon invites players to lead rescue missions across the moons of Darsalon, a world teeming with challenges and alien threats. You take on the role of a hero tasked with leading groups of lost darsanauts to safety. These companions boast advanced AI, dynamically reacting to terrain, lighting conditions, and other characters to follow your guidance and stay out of harm's way.

The game combines classic gameplay elements with modern innovations, offering a unique blend of 2D and 3D experiences. Set in a richly detailed lunar landscape, the game challenges players with intricate terrains and dynamic fluid mechanics. Players must skillfully use a variety of tools, including a laser gun and a ground maker gun, to overcome obstacles and enemies

While writing an article, I accidentally came across an interview with Dr. Kucho to Martin Jovanchevski, where he talked about what he aimed to achieve when creating his gaming masterpiece.

Drawing inspiration from classics like Lemmings, Oddworld, and Metal Slug, Dr. Kucho infused the gameplay with a retro-futuristic charm reminiscent of the 1950s and 60s sci-fi stories like Forbidden Planet and Flash Gordon. Gameplay evolved through trial and error, refining the mechanics to balance quick action with strategic NPC management. This iterative creativity translated into a dynamic, engaging experience that's as fresh as it is nostalgic.

The soundtrack plays a critical role in setting the vibe. Dr. Kucho aimed for an authentic Commodore 64 sound, using both emulator plugins and real devices to create tracks dynamic enough to fit each gameplay moment. Intense pieces fuel action sequences, while slower melodies complement puzzles and exploration. The result is an auditory homage to retro gaming that enriches the atmosphere.
