  • The DJI OSMO Action 5 Pro is ideal for adventure videographers and vloggers, boasting a 40 MP resolution and 4K at 60fps. It excels in some aspects over the GoPro HERO13 making it a perfect choice for extreme videos.

The season for new releases is ongoing, and another company has introduced a new device for hiking videographers—an action camera with enhanced features from DJI. We recently reviewed the new HERO13 Black, but it seems some users are not satisfied with GoPro's latest model due to the complicated setup process via the Android app. The good news is that the OSMO Action 5 Pro might serve as a great alternative for vloggers. The model has a four-hour battery life (240 minutes) powered by a 1950 mAh battery, along with a camera that shoots in 4K at 60fps and brighter dual OLED displays.

Let’s look closely to see if these action cameras are true competitors.

DJI OSMO Action 5 Pro Features

The new action camera features a higher 40 MP resolution and upgraded hardware. DJI has made notable improvements in 4K shooting, with a wide dynamic range of up to 13.5 stops, ensuring excellent image quality. The Osmo Action 5 Pro uses the same 1/1.3-inch sensor as the DJI Osmo Action 4, delivering high-quality images in both low light and bright conditions. It can record video in 4K at 60fps. To improve video quality in low light, the Action 5 Pro employs an AI algorithm that reduces noise and sharpens images in SuperNight mode.

The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro also offers advanced shooting features like HorizonSteady and RockSteady 3.0 stabilization modes, which reduce shakes and correct horizontal tilts. The OLED displays reach a peak brightness of 800 nits (with the rear at 1000 nits) and have a 16% better screen-to-body ratio thanks to a larger panel and slimmer bezels. The tempered glass screens provide durability and ease of use, even in wet conditions.

This camera can connect via Bluetooth to the DJI Mic2 transmitter for high-resolution audio recording without needing a receiver. It also has more internal storage, offering 47 GB in addition to support for a micro SD card. The Osmo Action 5 Pro allows for high-speed transfers of up to 80 MB/s using Wi-Fi 6 or USB 3.0, and it includes streaming capabilities over Wi-Fi, a timecode for syncing video from multiple cameras, pre-recording features, highlighting, and more. Comparison with GoPro HERO13

Well, we can already analyze the numbers based on the specifications and reviews from owners of cameras from both manufacturers. The first thing that stands out is the presence of internal storage, longer battery life, and better photo quality thanks to the 40-megapixel camera, compared to the 27 MP in the HERO13. Also, if you're a vlogger capturing your active adventures, you'll appreciate the enhanced underwater shooting capabilities and a wider temperature range from -4°F to 113°F. Additionally, you’ll benefit from up to 4 hours of recording compared to 2.5 hours. The connectivity issues with the GoPro and its $50 higher price tag don't work in its favor either. However, it's not all straightforward. The DJI OSMO shoots at a maximum resolution of 4K, while the HERO can capture video in 5.3K, providing clearer images.

Which action camera is best for you? If you're a vlogger who enjoys photography and filming in extreme locations, the DJI Action 5 Pro is a great choice. However, if high-resolution video is your priority, consider the GoPro HERO13 Black. As for connection issues, I think they will be managed in future software updates.
