Since its founding in 1946, JBL has grown rapidly to become a leader in high-quality audio products for the home and car. Founded by James Bullough Lansing (you see those initials that made the brand famous), who had a deep passion for music production, JBL continues to strive to redefine the sound quality of speakers through stylish design and innovation. From the brand's transition to hi-fi loudspeakers through Hollywood to recently setting new standards for sound clarity in wireless speakers, JBL's history is rich. Follow the sound waves.
History and Evolution
When it comes to high-quality sound, JBL is one of the most trusted names in the business. The history of JBL goes back more than 70 years, starting with a small company that specialized in the production of loudspeakers for cinemas. Although the history of the brand itself begins in 1946, founder James Bullough Lansing began his business journey in the world of audio 19 years before that, and the first company he founded was called Lansing Manufacturing Company.
In 1933, the company helped MGM switch to higher-quality speakers for the studio, taking part in the development of the Shearer Horn - a speaker that even received a scientific and technical award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Many challenges awaited the founder, such as a constant lack of money, he was even called an innovative engineer, but an unsuccessful businessman. The company was bought, and the production premises were left. Perhaps all this took its toll on James, and in 1949 he committed suicide. The insurance paid JBL $10,000 as a beneficiary, and this money greatly helped the further development of the business, which was led by the company's vice president, Bill Thomas.
It is he who is credited with the development of the campaign, and the production of speakers reached a new level. By 1977, professional music studios were using JBL acoustics more than all other brands combined. Hollywood studios, rock festivals, cinemas, and households were also regular customers of the company. Over time, JBL has become a well-known brand, expanding its range to a wide range of audio equipment, including headphones and Bluetooth speakers. The company was bought out in 1969 by Jervis (later renamed Harman International, which is now a separate subsidiary of Samsung Electronics).
Today, JBL is synonymous with impeccable sound quality and advanced technology. Whether you're looking for a JBL Bluetooth speaker of any size to take on the go or a full home theater system, JBL has something to offer everyone.
