Originally released in 1993 for the Super Famicom, Romancing SaGa 2 was developed by Square and quickly became a renowned title in Japan, selling over 1.5 million copies. The game was a pioneering entry in the SaGa series, featuring a unique inheritance system where player choices influenced the storyline over generations. The development was led by series creator Akitoshi Kawazu, who emphasized innovation in gameplay design, focusing on a single dynastic narrative.

In 2011, the game was expanded for Japanese mobile devices, leading to a remaster developed by ArtePiazza for modern platforms, which included updated graphics and additional content. This remaster was released worldwide between 2016 and 2017, bringing the beloved gameplay mechanics to a new audience.
